Zoë Skoulding w/Alan Holmes (UK)

Zoë Skoulding will narrate a journey through the remains of a future city in a voice and soundscape performance with Alan Holmes. If language is the architecture that we live in, this sequence of texts, performed with looped and treated vocals, is a drift through its ruins and echoes.

This performance explores the ways in which poetry and sound might be related to architecture, and how the poem might parallel the city’s simultaneous processes of decay, demolition and construction. Distorted and repeated voices evoke a city space slipping between the past and the present, between dystopia and fragmented glimpses of a utopia that lives on in the possibility that things could be different. The texts make connections between real and mythical cities, between a shared European history and the instant global communication of the present. Site recordings of buildings and streets from Bangor to Budapest will be manipulated live by Alan Holmes to create a multi-layered sound environment.

Zoë Skoulding's third collection of poems, Remains of a Future City, is published in July 2008.  Alan Holmes is a member of Ectogram. They both live in north Wales, and are members of the psychogeographical collective Parking Non-Stop, whose album Species Corridor is to be released in 2008.
