Brötzmann and Nilssen-love was on tour some years ago and spoke of doing something with Kondo. Paal had previously done a couple of tours with original silence and offonoff with Massimo Pupillo and thought he would be a perfect match.
Brötzmann and Kondo go way back with some of the large ensembles (Merz), collaborations in Japan with globe unity and not least the Die Like a Dog Quartet. This new group follows in the footsteps of the dog quartet, not to forget last exit; another power group in the history of Brötzmann’s line ups.
This new lineup is loud, hard hitting and quite intense, yet allowing softer playing when needed. The music bounces between grooves and free playing and pushes all members in new directions. All music is improvised.
The quartet has already done two tours and will continue on a longer European tour in October 2009. The recording on this cd is from the first tour, September 2008, recorded live at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam.
